Donald Trump has spoken out about an ‘important letter’ he received from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about bringing ‘peace’ to the Ukraine-Russia war.

On February 28, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the White House’s Oval House in Washington DC sitting down alongside US President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance to be, well, berated.

Trump says he received letter from Zelenskyy calling for peace

During his sit-down with Zelenskyy, Trump accused Ukraine’s president of ‘gambling with the lives of millions of people’, and even went so far as to allege he’s ‘gambling with World War Three,’ doing so while also ‘disrespecting’ the US.

Zelenskyy later took to Twitter thanking America for its ‘support’ and for the visit, later tweeting to clarify Ukraine is ‘ready to work fast to end the war,’ suggesting the ‘first stages could be the release of prisoners and truce in the sky – ban on missiles, long-ranged drones, bombs on energy and other civilian infrastructure – and truce in the sea immediately, if Russia will do the same’.

“Nobody wants peace more than Ukrainians. My team and I stand ready to work under President Trump’s strong leadership to get a peace that lasts,” he added.

And in his address to Congress last night (March 4), Trump has since revealed he received a letter from President Zelenskyy.

The US President said: “The letter reads Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer.

Trump continued: “Nobody wants peace more than the Ukrainians. Regarding the agreement on minerals and security, Ukraine is ready to sign it at any time that is convenient for you.”

The president reflected: “I appreciate that he sent this letter. Just got it a little while ago.”

Trump went on to note the US had ‘simultaneously had serious discussions with Russia’.

He continued: “[We] have received strong signals that they are ready for peace. Wouldn’t that be beautiful?”

Trump’s joint address to Congress follows the White House revealing the US would be pausing all military aid to Ukraine.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine three years ago, the US has provided the equivalent of $65.9 billion in military assistance to Ukraine, the State Department revealed in January earlier this year.

In response to the US’ decision, Kremlin spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, said that if ‘true’, then the decision would ‘really encourage the Kyiv regime to [come to] the peace process’ and that Trump’s ‘desire to bring peace to Ukraine’ was ‘welcome’.

Peskov resolved: “We see certain things and receive certain information about the proposed actions in this direction. This is also welcome. But we will continue to see how the situation develops in reality.”

The Ukrainian president spoke out after Donald Trump accused him of ‘gambling with World War Three’ at their White House Meeting

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued a statement admitting his meeting with Donald Trump ‘did not go the way it was supposed to’.

Zelenskyy took to Twitter to share a statement today (March 4), after he was asked to leave the White House early following his meeting with Trump on February 28; a meeting intended to pre-empt a minerals deal.

During the meeting, Trump accused Zelenskyy of ‘gambling with the lives of millions of people’ as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues.

“You’re gambling with World War Three, and what you’re doing is very disrespectful to the country, this country that’s backed you far more than a lot of people say they should have,” Trump said.

After Zelenskyy left the White House, Trump announced that he was halting US aid for Ukraine, with White House officials saying the pause would stay in place until Trump believes Zelenskyy is committed to seeking peace talks.

Now, the Ukrainian president has shared a statement in which he reiterated ‘Ukraine’s commitment to peace’ and made clear that no one wants an ‘endless war’.

He continued: “Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer. Nobody wants peace more than Ukrainians. My team and I stand ready to work under President Trump’s strong leadership to get a peace that lasts.

“We are ready to work fast to end the war, and the first stages could be the release of prisoners and truce in the sky — ban on missiles, long-ranged drones, bombs on energy and other civilian infrastructure — and truce in the sea immediately, if Russia will do the same.

“Then we want to move very fast through all next stages and to work with the US to agree a strong final deal.”
